Rose essential oil vs rose absolute – What’s the difference?

Before sharing my rose diffuser blends, I want to start with the basics. Rose oil comes in 2 varieties, rose essential oil and rose absolute. How are they different and which one is best for aromatherapy? Let’s find out!

Extraction method

  • Rose essential oil is made via hydro-distillation. The petals of the rose bush are harvested before sunrise and the precious aromatics are extracted with a distillation process.
  • Rose absolute is extracted with a chemical solvent that is later removed.

Appearance

  • Rose essential oil is pale, yellowish, and slightly viscous and will solidify at temperatures below 72°F / 22°C.
  • Rose absolute has a deep orange or red color and is only semi-transparent.

Scent

  • Rose essential oil has a rich and full-bodied rose scent similar to old English garden roses. It’s sweet, a little spicy and with a lovely honey note.
  • Rose absolute features a strong floral fragrance withgreen, hay-like undertones.

Price

  • Rose essential oil: Since the production is more labor intensive, rose essential oil is far more expensive than rose absolute. You’ll find 2-ml bottles offered for $80 and upwards.
  • Rose absolute is more affordable. A 2-ml of product usually cost $20 to $30.

If you’d like to learn more about the differences between rose essential oil and rose absolute, refer to the Types of rose essential oil section at the end of the post.

Rose aromatherapy

What is the best rose oil for aromatherapy?

Essential oils are preferred over absolutes for aromatherapy. Absolutes may still contain trace amounts of the chemical solvent and thus they are not seen as pure for aromatherapeutic applications.

However, rose essential oil and rose absolute both offer aromatherapy benefits. While pure rose essential oil is your best option, it’s perfectly fine (and more affordable) to create these rose diffuser blends with rose absolute.

And if you’re ready to invest in rose essential oil, you’ll be pleased to know that the EO is incredibly potent. Just a few drops are enough to scent a whole room, so you need less rose essential oil than absolute.

Where can I buy rose absolute and essential oil?

You can easily find rose absolute and essential oil online. The following manufacturers and shops offer rose oils and I trust their quality completely:

When buying rose oil make sure it’s made from actual roses and 100% pure. What some of the cheaper brands offer as rose scented oil is often a dilution or synthetically created rose fragrance oil, not a real plant essence.

Substitutes for rose oil

  • Bourbon geranium essential oil is the closest substitute for rose essential oil. Rose germanium has a soft floral aroma that smells warm and rich.
  • Egyptian geranium essential oil has a strong, green floral fragrance.
  • Rose hydrosol: You can also use rose hydrosol to make rose diffuser blends. To do this, add 1/8 cup / 30 ml / 1 fl oz rose hydrosol to the water tank of your diffuser and fill the rest up with filtered or distilled water. To make your own, try my DIY rose water recipe.

Types of rose oil

We already talked about the difference between rose essential oil vs rose absolute. Before signing off, I want to share a little more information about the different types of rose oil.

It probably seems super-nerdy to obsess over essential oils, but I like to have ALL the information I can get. If you do too, you’ll going to enjoy my comparison of the various rose oils.

Rose essential oil

2 types of rose essential oil are available: Rose otto essential oil and Moroccan rose essential oil. Here’s more background information on both oils:

Rose otto essential oils

  • Facts: Rose otto essential oil is hydro-distilled from the petals of Bulgarian Rosa damascene flowers. This oil is also called Bulgarian rose essential oil or damask rose oil.
  • Scent: Rose otto provides a multilayered and deep floral fragrance that reminds me of a rose garden in full bloom.
  • Buy: Plant Therapy offers a pure rose otto essential oil, which comes with a hefty price tag, and a more affordable, diluted rose otto essential oil.

Moroccan rose oil

  • Facts: Moroccan rose essential oil is distilled from the flowers of the Rosa centifolia plant, which grows in Morocco. This oil is also known as Rose de Mai, Provence rose, may rose, or cabbage rose essential oil.
  • Scent: Rose de Mai essential oil is said to have an evocative, full-bodied rose scent. Since this oil is so rare, I sadly never had the chance to smell it myself.
  • Buy: The limited supply makes this one of the most precious essential oils in the world. I couldn’t find any seller who offers this type of rose oil to private consumers.

White rose essential oil

Mountain Rose Herbs also offered a unique white rose essential oil, but it seems no longer available on their site.

Rose absolute

Like rose essential oil, rose absolute can be made from Rosa x centifolia or Rosa damascene petals. Here’s a quick overview of both types of rose absolutes:

Bulgarian damask rose absolute

  • Facts: Bulgarian rose absolute is derived from the petals of damascene roses in a place called Valley of Roses in Bulgaria.
  • Scent: Rose damask features a sweet, deep and hypnotic floral aroma. The scent is perfectly balanced with honey undertones and a lemony-citrus note.
  • Buy: Mountain Rose Herbs has a fragrant damask rose absolute in their roster.

Rose centifolia absolute

  • Facts: Rose centifolia absolute is extracted from the flowers of the Rosa x centifolia plant that grows in Morocco. This absolute is also called Rose de Mai absolute or Provence rose absolute.
  • Scent: This rose absolute has a warm, deep floral scent with subtle honey and green nuances, and offers the delicate sweetness of fresh roses.
  • Buy: Plant Therapy sells a wonderful Rosa x centifolia absolute.
